Why does Filipino culture dictate that parents should be treated as gods?

The Army General literally threatened the US marines with decimation by his army troops if they did not stop! Marine leaders were replaced & military justice was done. So yes, the marines DID kill some innocents, but their families were NOT innocent and the result of the marine action was a sudden silence in raider activity in the area. Apparently, fearing a 100% extinction of a man’s family was enough to persuade him to NOT attack any more villages friendly to the US marines? So yes, a war crime, but also yes, it was an effective action too and no, it was not a random marine attack, but a provoked attack that went partly astray of its purpose. This event is a favorite for the communists in the islands to propagandize as a common occurrence though it happened just once, was NOT entirely unjustified AND resulted in discipline for the guilty marines.
My theory about the horrible men (sadly, according to Filipinas, they are the majority … though I STRONGLY personally doubt that is true) is that they feel cheated by their government, plus cheated and exploited by rich people. They feel utterly powerless and hopeless, unable to get ahead in life, doomed to misery. It is extremely difficult to earn enough to buy property when you are a poor Filipino. These men cannot even complain publicly about the problems in their country or the corruption at all levels of government because long ago there was a dictatorship and laws passed under the first and second generation of Marcos (before BBM, the 3rd gen) make speaking out an arrestable offense punishable by years in prison.
Despite USA being outnumbered 15 to 1 in soldiers and similarly outmatched in taxes, Spain was thoroughly smashed in every conflict where they encountered Americans. Spain was left reeling in shock when over 100,000 Spanish soldiers were suddenly prisoners of war claimed by USA who only had 6000 soldiers and a very small navy prior to the attacks. The entire WORLD was shocked at those surprising events that happened in a very short period of time. President McKinley and the republican led congress wanted to end the hostilities as soon as possible, so despite inflicting some of the most amazing military upsets of all world history, USA (the war winner) PAID Spain (the losers) buying all of their colonies, then setting them free little by little (except Puerto Rico).
I know one woman now whose mother made LOTS of bad choices in men, but is now with a wonderful Christian man (age 68) with very nice kids of his own. There are many really wonderful Christian Filipinos. Most are not pastors or other FT christian workers but laymen. For a well-known great example of a truly beautiful christian Filipino I strongly recommend ROGER of Roger & Ismi blogs (easily located on u tube). They are a wonderful couple, very admirable!
Another I remember working as a teacher in a certain well-known Arab country? She was raped, became pregnant, delivered the baby at home, then returned to the same job … where a SECOND man raped her enough to impregnate her. Again, she returned to the same job! Those kids never really knew their mom either and certainly would never meet their fathers. (I stopped chatting w her and made it a personal policy to refuse all requests from arab-based OSWs to talk; they choose to be slaves and worse, so I can never associate with them).
During the dictatorship, surviving wartime records in the Philippines were carefully purged of anything the might indicate what happened when and where during the Japanese occupation, but the dictator’s reach did not include records held in restricted archives inside Japan and the USA. It also could not cover the many 1000s of testimonies from soldiers in USA, especially the war criminals and the actual resisters (very few survived all the way to 1945!)

Ex 1. Overseas worker moms: Very often OSWs only see their children in person every 2 years, or less. Kids end up not knowing their own mothers and even resenting them for “abandoning them” even though she went overseas to provide a good living for her children. I recall a woman working like a slave in Taiwan living in a cramped room full of bunkbeds to support her 3 children whom she could not afford to go home to see in person. 8 years she had been gone and very often when she called home for a video chat, she was left crying because her children did not even want to speak with her.
Most elderly people have trouble finding work because employers (especially for sales positions) prefer young pretty girls. The jobs that remain are drudgery and many children love their parents far too much to see them suffering handwashing laundry for other families despite severe arthritis from decades of doing the same.
They SAY they would not want the ones that fled them earlier and claim they got tired of them and kicked them out as they cried, begging to stay. They repeat this process several times over. Why? because they are evil predators who seek to destroy innocence. They enjoy the feelings of power they get from having someone they can make to suffer, whom they can put down. Why? because then they have SOMEONE lower in position than they are.
Sometimes, a richer family will know a poor family and have an ongoing relationship for decades where the poor family provides labor for the rich family and later in life, there is a very close friendship between the two such that even elderly poor family folk can get a little work for their food needs.
The relevant part: HER mother “M” had done the same but traveled by plane for hours to get work resulting in some very bad situations for her daughter who had to flee into the night and was taken in by an elderly retired schoolteacher whom she had never even met before. That relationship was strained for a while but after becoming a mom herself, she was giving support to her mother who is in her late 50s, preferring to care for her mother than to see her mother work as a maid somewhere. Her support was based upon 3 things: LOVE, sense of obligation to family, gratitude.
Ex3. Online workers: I met a Filipina years ago (still friends today) who made VERY good money (almost as much as I get per month!) working online contracts. She supported not only her one son, but 2 kids from her drug-brain-fried (drug-disabled) elder sister, plus a 3rd sister, her BF, their 3 kids AND still sent money to her own farmer parents too! She also helped other family members out. For her family is a TEAM SPORT, meaning whatever position one person is good at they play, while others play other positions. For whatever reason, that woman hates cooking & considers it beneath her. She never cooked a single meal in her life. She also did nearly zero housekeeping. Her family provided those services for her and also provided some labor for her projects (home construction, rental house repairs, etc) Mostly, she was the breadwinner after years of getting help when she was barely scraping by. For her, it was all about love and a matter of extended family helping each other with whatever they could.

Many older women get involved as shopkeepers or maids/home cooks or even as porters carrying packages from the shopping of a doctor’s wife (a woman I personally know).
Literally, USA is at fault ONLY for granting independence. If we had kept the islands longer under our control, then they would likely be as successful as all the other nations USA shepherded now are (UK, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Japan & Korea). The UN granted many islands to US protectorship post WWII. Every single one still under US control now has a per capita income rivaling the European average. Every single one granted independence is now a hell hole ruled by a very few corrupt criminal families who treat all others in their islands as slaves. The only fully free islands in the Pacific today are the ones USA kept occupying forces upon. History proves, US rule means freedom but independence means slavery by other names.
I am truly shocked by the many foolish responses to this question. MOST of them are clearly from foreign people who do not know the Philippines or Filipino people. Since I have met many 100s of people in the Philippines and have had scores of deep conversations with many (mostly female), I think I have a fair perspective without being Filipino myself.

The truth about USA causing all the problems in the modern Philippines is that USA FAILED to establish a stable government of the common people in the country. A few city people educated in US schools took leadership of the country 2 years before the planned date and after most institutions were destroyed by the Japanese. USA failed to rebuild the nation as it rebuilt Europe & Japan, then Korea. Many (most?) of the big Filipino landowners today are descendants of traitorous Japanese collaborators who cared more for their own family’s wealth & position than for their fellow Filipinos who suffered horrible things under the xenophobic Japanese who considered Filipinos to be less than human. Many gained their wealth from loyalty to the dictator.
Many years ago, I befriended a Filipina working as a janitor in the university. Her husband was a janitor there when they first met (long before the internet). I learned a lot from her because she became my frequent lunch buddy when I was student there. She originally took part time janitor work just to send money to her family in the Philippines. Later, it was FT to pay for her children’s needs despite them getting free university coursework from her husband’s job. Then, in the end, it was because she could not stay home in an empty house and she liked being around people and feeling useful. She still sent money back to her homeland, but saved a lot too. I met her husband in the grocery store when I hugged his wife in front of him. He was a little surprised, but when he realized who I was he smiled and understood.
Many younger men will not do the low paying hard labor jobs their fathers did/do. They work jobs for a little while but become disgusted (or get fired usually) and quit then the woman they are abusing gets to pay all their expenses WHILE being told she is worthless and stupid and unlovable and “not up to my standards.”

Blame the women? Because attractive young Filipinas are preferred for all the easy sales and clerk jobs (often for much better pay that laborers), these guys learn early to resent the young women for their relative “ease of life.” Then there are the call center jobs and foreign companies who also seem to prefer hiring females (though they do hire some men). Those jobs often pay better than clerk/sales jobs. So again, these fellows see reason to resent young Filipinas. Then there is the matter of education. In the lowest classes, males are encouraged to work right away to earn money for siblings and parents but elder daughters often fill this roll also. Younger daughters are the ones most likely to get a college degree because of their older siblings and sometimes even younger brothers who help pay the way for them. Again, these evil men see this as a reason to resent the young females. It is this built up resentment coupled an inability to lash out against all they feel have wronged them.
Enter USA. An appointed rich kid democrat bureaucrat 3 steps down in the hierarchy from the US President started the war with Spain AGAINST the will of the US Congress against the will of the Republican President McKinley (assassinated). The President literally learned the war had started when he woke up in the morning to the news that the US Navy had just decimated the Spanish Pacific fleet and laid claim to the Philippines despite having just a handful of marines to do so (mostly they allied with a few roving criminal bands now taught to be “freedom fighters” or alternatively “The Philippines Army.”
Just before the planned 1948 Independence, Imperial Japan invaded. They destroyed many churches and schools and enslaved tens of 1000s of people, pillaging the countryside of anything they could lay hands upon. Some criminal gangs sprang up including one led by a man released from prison camp (Ferdinand) after just 6 months after his Japanese-collaborating father and Filipino senator promised the Japanese his son would work for them if released from the prison camp. Taking cues from the earlier Rizal who claimed his 300 Spanish-speaking bandit-riflemen from the Americas was actually the “Army of the Philippines.” Japanese records not destroyed indicate Ferdinand’s gang provided metal pans and roof parts to the Japanese army as well as provincial girls seized from mountain villages who were used as comfort women (sex slaves), most of whom died under the abuse.

ASIDE: This USA hatred is almost as irrational as hating Filipinas for simply being weaker and more useful in marketing than males. Why? Spain literally invaded and conquered tribes in the islands and made an occupied country with a unified colonial government where before there were literally 1000s of governments that did not follow one another. Spain exploited the colony a bit but not nearly so much as they exploited Central America and South America. Spain must be credited for combating islamic pirates, Chinese pirates and hill raider tribes too. Yet, people from Central and South America also came to the Philippines and began forming roving rebel/criminal bands. Some of these people later became called “freedom fighters” though their primary activities were always raiding villages for food, supplies and women, not attacking large formations of Spanish soldiers.
Ferdinand later claimed his bandit raider band of Japanese collaborators was actually a rebel band fighting the Japanese. He alternatively claimed USA had promoted him to Captain, General, then the final claim was Colonel (despite never getting ANY promotion past his commission to 2d lieutenant when he surrendered without a fight to the Japanese just a few months after getting a commission thanks to his father’s Senatorial political influence). He also claimed numerous awards for valor and bravery, etc. none of which ever happened because USA keeps EXHAUSTIVE records all the way to the Revolutionary war over 150 years earlier and has no records of any of his claims.
Many men in the Philippines are horrible people. They meet a virgin province girl, force themselves upon her, keep abusing her for 1–5 years till she flees then repeat the process. Sometimes, they seek out a girl who got away previously and force her back into the same trap a 2d or 3rd or even 4th time!
These often idle, unemployed men are fertile grounds for communists and radical islamic hate groups to fill with propaganda. Their irrational hatreds are fired carefully up and many become radicalized. The majority of the idle evil men, however, just learn to hate foreigners in general. They literally are taught that the one country who BLED in war MULTIPLE TIMES and NEVER exploited the nation’s resources is the somehow the most hated of colonizer countries!? They learn to hate all westerners, and Americans in particular.
It was not racism, nor colonialism (USA has always been the ANTI-colonial power, ever since 1775) but a lack of willpower and a matter of fatigue from years of war waged with every ounce of strength USA could muster that caused USA to grant independence in 1946. It was too early and should have been delayed at least until 1955 IMO, probably until 1965. 20 years to partially rebuild the nation, but also to educate a single generation of new leaders might have been enough, MAYBE to avert the problems that are now the basis of the Filipino system.
Her mother BTW, refused to sleep in a bed, preferring the floor. Visiting her in her home meant her mother would travel for hours then sleep in the floor between the 2 rooms (yet I was also allowed some closed door visit time in her room). The whole family had grown up super humble, as in often sharing 1 can of sardines amongst 6+ people with some veggies for dinner. Fighting severe poverty as a family, together, bonded them very tightly -for pure survival. The older brother who seemed super lazy? He had been the entire family’s breadwinner working terrible merchant marine jobs for over 20 years, supporting a brother ans sisters and parents alike. So, often, just bc you SEE a lazy person does NOT mean this was always so. He got some injuries and never married bc he spent his younger years at sea and never really got to know any women (besides family), for more than a day or two.
It is very difficult getting ANY employment at all, even if you have a college degree because the best jobs go to children of the rich families, not to the people who made the best grades in school. Then, if you get a job, it is for low pay and under very difficult circumstances, like slave labor. It is exceptionally difficult getting loans in the Philippines unless you have a rich family, so founding a business is very difficult and most businesses are tiny shops or sole-worker trade jobs.

In the Philippines, Americans encountered murderous hill raiders, pirates, bandit gangs and a vast array of peoples utterly unable to interact with each other peacefully, let alone able to suddenly form a national government able to withstand future colonizing invasions. So, USA invested VAST sums of money building government structures (many still in use today, save those the Japanese destroyed), sewer and drainage systems, schools, hospitals and churches all over the islands. USA had mixed results with the bandit gangs, eliminating many smaller ones but not the Rizal gang (now falsely tooted as national heroes due to the relationship with later bandit gangs which became leading land-owner families post WWII).
Ex 4. Elderly workers: An elderly man might be working as a hard construction laborer though he is pushing 70. Why? because he has children and grandchildren whom he wants to have a better life. He is doing all he can to earn money for the family until the day he dies. (Actual fellow whose face is burned into my mind; spoke no English, so talking with him required a translator. Though he said his name 3x, I could not understand it). Some elderly folk struggle hard to work as well as 29yo men so they can continue getting jobs. That man? I was astonished for how little money he worked and how old he was and how proud he was to be still working. I instantly held that man in very high regards!
Ex2. Big city mom/village kids: I was actually engaged to one Filipina (“J” a 17 month relationship; don’t ask!) who worked in one town but traveled 4 hours to get back to her 4yo son once per 2 weeks. That poor little guy cried a LOT after the 1st week away though his grandma is a VERY good woman whom I admire very much. He also cried a bit because he got picked on in the provincial school for not having a dad. She loves that little guy very much and it killed her to know he was in pain from her absence. She literally skipped eating some days to save bus fare to go visit him. That relationship is very close.

One situation with the Huks is widely taught today as an American bloodthirsty genocide. What happened? Raider Huks slaughtered some villagers friendly with US marines and got a couple marines also. The marines were super enraged to see their favorite Filipinas senselessly chopped to pieces (an their brothers’ mutilated bodies) in what they saw as a demonic display of barbarism. The marines gave chase but were too late in beginning the chase in difficult terrain known better to the raiders than to them. Finding some supporters of the raiders, the marines decimated the villages, then continued hunting the culprits.
See? Things are never so simple as they appear. For Filipinos, there are seasons of life and then there is also reality. Sometimes a child is disappointing and gets into drugs or other stuff. Sometimes a young woman will never tell her family that she has sold her body for money, but she shares that money with her parents to make their lives easier (yeah, I got to know a girl in that situation too; she was super ashamed of what she had done a couple times). It has nothing to do with deification. Rather, it is a matter of respect for elders who have struggled in life and also a matter of love and also a matter of feelings of obligation.
Ex 5. Foreign brides: Many ladies marry foreigners because Filipinas are the best wives in all the world for English-speaking men (speaking in general terms). Many of these overseas brides want to help their families but many consider it THEIR responsibility, not the responsibility of their husbands.
